Musician and record producer Steve Albini has won his first World Series of Poker gold bracelet, edging out more than 300 players in Seven Card Stud to win $105,629.
“There’s still hope for everybody!” Albini told World Series of Poker after the win.
He beat six-time winner Chris Ferguson and then took the win over Jeff Lisandro, also a six-time winner, to clinch his title.
Albini, a musician with the band Shellac and producer for Nirvana and the Pixies, has been playing poker for decades.
His band had just finished a European tour when Albini decided to make the trip to Las Vegas for the tournament.
“I am ecstatic that a player as mediocre as me can outlast all of these better players and end up with a bracelet!”
The event was happening in conjunction with two other poker championships – Poker Players Championship and Seniors Event – which, according to Albini, is the reason why he was able to win..
“The field for the stud tournament, I think, was kind of historically weak, which allowed a sucker like me to make it to the final table.”
